Today we used magnifying glasses to take a closer look at old nickels and the new nickels. We noticed that Thomas Jefferson looked different on the new nickel. We could see the front of his face on the new nickel and his profile on the old one. We had fun sorting the coins to match the coins on the trays. We had to look carefully to tell the difference between our silver coins.
The other day, we used the magnifying glasses to look at pennies. It was fun to see the year that these pennies were made. We could even see the statue of Abraham Lincoln on the back of the penny!
We worked on our money rhymes so we can remember how much each coin is worth:
Penny, penny, easily spent. Copper brown and worth one cent!
Nickel, nickel, thick and fat. You're worth five cents. I know that!
Here are a few ideas for working with money at home
1. Have your child sort coins into piles of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
2. Help your child count their coins by ones, fives or tens.
3. Give you child simple chores they can do to earn coins.
4. When your child earns $1.00, take hime to the dollar store to buy a special treat!
