Our Fun December Things!

We have a lot of fun things going on in kindergarten next week!

On Monday, we are going to make crafts with all of our kindergarten friends.

On Tuesday, we are going to wear our p.j.s, we are going to watch the Polar Express movie and we are going to have popcorn and hot chocolate!

On Wednesday, we are going to sing-a-long! We will have our winter party in our room!

December News

"The Thanksgiving Feast was fun!" said Janay.

Our Thanksgiving Feast


Good food, good friends and good fun!  We had an abundant supply of all three of these things at our Thanksgiving Feast! We want to thank all of our generous parents for supplying us with more than enough food to feed us all! We even shared with some of our first grade friends!! After we ate we took a quick nap (2 minutes!) then it was time to get our "groove on" with some cool, new dance moves! We did the Y.M.C.A , the Turkey Dance (a.k.a. The Chicken Dance) and several other dances.

A surprise visit from Miss Angel gave us a chance to give her our card and say our good-byes to her. We wanted to let her know how much we appreciated all of her help while she was working in our classroom! We will miss her and we wish her the best of luck! :)

"The acrobats from China are coming today!" said Charlie.

" We had Fun Friday and played carpet BINGO!" said Alexander.

"We only have 16 friends here today and 6 friends are absent." said Janay.

Library Books and Stickers for EVERYONE!!



For the third time this year, we are celebrating the fact that EVERYONE returned their library books!  Our librarian, Mrs. Litz, was so proud of us that she gave us each a sticker!  It is so nice when everyone remembers their books on our library day (Day 4) so that everyone is able to check out a new library book. Great job kindergarten!!  Keep up the good work and keep reading!!

Charlie taped Mr. Michaels to the flag pole!  Our friends threw pies at him!  It was funny!

Jeremiah got pie on him too!

We got to see the high school band!

Happy Pumpkin Day!

We were reading, writing and thinking about pumpkins all week! After learning about the rocker balance in math, we tried to think of things that were heavier and lighter than our pumpkin. We took our pumpkin to the nurse's office to get it weighed and we were surprised to see that it weighed 13 pounds!!

After waiting all week, today was our day to carve the pumpkin! For many of us, it was our very first time to have such an experience. Mrs. Beiter had a special tool that could cut the pumpkin but would not cut us! We rolled up our sleeves, used our muscles and got to work! First we cut a lid. Then we had to scoop out all of the "guts" and seeds. We learned that the "guts" are actually called pulp.

 After we washed the seeds, we sprayed them with butter, added some salt and cooked them in a little oven. We all tried the seeds. Then we made a list of who liked to eat them and who did not. Some people didn't think they would like them but changed their minds after they tasted them. They were delicious!!

We then took turns carving the face onto our jack-o-lantern while we illustrated our pumpkin books.



Just as we finished our fun activities, Mrs. Lundy surprised us with a special fall snack that we all enjoyed! Thank you for thinking of us Mrs. Lundy!  It made the perfect end to a perfect day!  :)

A new assistant for Mr. Michaels??!


Does Mr. Michaels need a new assistant? Have we got the guy for the job! His name is Charlie. He works hard, he knows a lot about numbers and he is quite the snazzy dresser!!

With the elections coming up soon, I vote for Charlie as the "Mayor of Kindergaren"! 

Thursday was Twin Day!


Keith and Alexander were so excited to see that they were twins for the day! Not only did they dress the same, but they were both also hard workers, kind to their friends, and good role models!

Our First Interactive Blogging Experience as a Class!

We  went  to  our  1st  A.B.C.  with  Mr. V. yesterday!

We  had  lots  of  fun  at  all  of  the stations! 

We  go  to  A.B.C.  on  Day  3. 


We wrote this blog together as a class at the computer lab. I asked the students what they wanted to share with their parents about what we have been doing in school, and this is what they came up with as a class. The were very excited to see their words and ideas up on the large Smart Board in our computer lab. We will now be going to the computer lab after lunch on Day 4 to add our "kindergarten happenings" to our classroom blog. Be sure to come back often to check it out!

Money, money money!


Today we used magnifying glasses to take a closer look at old nickels and the new nickels. We noticed that Thomas Jefferson looked different on the new nickel. We could see the front of his face on the new nickel and his profile on the old one. We had fun sorting the coins to match the coins on the trays. We had to look carefully to tell the difference between our silver coins. 

The other day, we used the magnifying glasses to look at pennies. It was fun to see the year that these pennies were made. We could even see the statue of Abraham Lincoln on the back of the penny! 

We worked on our money rhymes so we can remember how much each coin is worth:
Penny, penny, easily spent. Copper brown and worth one cent!

Nickel, nickel, thick and fat. You're worth five cents. I know that! 


Here are a few ideas for working with money at home
1. Have your child sort coins into piles of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
2. Help your child count their coins by ones, fives or tens.
3. Give you child simple chores they can do to earn coins.
4. When your child earns $1.00, take hime to the dollar store to buy a special treat!

President Obama

Today we got together with all of our kindergarten friends to listen to President Obama talk to us about how to be successful in school. We were very good listeners! Mr. Michaels asked us what we could do to be successful at Cochran. We all had lots of wonderful answers! We said we could "listen to our teachers", "do our best", "work hard", "follow the rules", and lots of other great ideas!! The teachers could definitely tell that these kindergarteners had listened to our president and understood his message.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff


This week we have started our fairy tale unit. Our first fairy tale is the Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children came up with several examples of things that are big medium and small. We love the part when the goats go "Trip Trap, Trip Trap, Trip Trap" over the bridge. That troll is funny when he yells "Be off with you!!"Hopefully after internalizing this story we will be ready to act it out with masks on Friday.


We had our first fire drill yesterday while we were at the library (so much for the library being a quiet place!!) We did a great job! Everyone stayed calm and we all got out quickly and quietly! We practiced our own fire drill today from our classroom so we will know where to go and what to do when we have our next one.

Walk! Walk! Walk!


Hello Everyone!  I can't believe that September is almost over!! The days are flying by so quickly!

We have been working so hard! I'm sure that your children are tired at the end of each day!

On Friday, we went on several walks. Before school we had our Cochran Walk @ School Day. Then for our math activity, we went on a number walk. We found lots of numbers all over our school! After lunch we went for a fitness walk and we found some more numbers around the outside of our school! It was a fun and beautiful day from beginning to end! We can't wait to do it all again on Friday, October 2,2009 for our Walk-a-thon!
